Helping Students Develop Self-Motivation
What is Self-Motivation?
Self-motivation in students refers to the internal drive or desire to actively pursue their learning goals and complete tasks without needing constant external pressure or reminders, meaning they are motivated to learn and achieve by their own volition and intrinsic interest in the subject matter.
Key aspects of self-motivated students:
- Taking ownership of learning: Students actively engage in learning, setting their own goals, and seeking out information to achieve them.
- Intrinsic motivation: A student’s desire to learn stems from a genuine interest in the subject rather than external rewards like grades.
- Persistence in the face of challenges: Learners will likely persevere through difficult tasks and setbacks, adapting their strategies to overcome obstacles.
- Time management skills: Self-motivated students are good at effectively planning and managing their study time.
- Self-assessment and reflection: Students can evaluate their own progress and identify areas where they need to improve.

In addition to the initial Executive Function Benchmark Assessment and the M-E-T-A Composite Index, ExQ monitors progress in nine areas of Executive Function throughout the year to help students understand their learning pace and personal change level as they progress.
ExQ also provides data linked to evidence-based teaching strategies to help educators with classroom instruction, linking the Executive Function skills students learn with ExQ to other classes, subject areas, and classroom behaviors.
We know ExQ works with data, but we also know it works because students, teachers, and parents report measurable positive changes in behaviors. In their own words, students tell us how they become more aware of their study skills and habits and, in doing so, learn how to set goals and apply these new skills to achieve their goals. When students understand they can develop skills to help them achieve in school and in life, they begin to take charge of their education and move forward with confidence and courage and progress forward with improved learning outcomes.
