ExQ trains and certifies students in nine areas to develop skills they will need to succeed in college, jobs and beyond:
Focus
ExQ trains the brain’s ability to figure out what’s important and then pay attention to it.
Impact:
Students stay on task, avoid distractions, complete work with fewer interruptions — improving productivity and reducing wasted time.
Working Memory
ExQ strengthens the ability to actively hold information in mind while doing tasks (e.g., hold several details while planning).
Impact:
Students can follow multi-step instructions, comprehend complex material, manage simultaneous information — yielding better performance and less frustration.
Prospective Memory
ExQ trains remembering to remind oneself to follow up with goals in the future.
Impact:
Students stop forgetting deadlines, follow-through with steps, and revisit prior tasks — leading to fewer missed assignments and stronger academic reliability.
Organization and Planning
ExQ develops the ability to reach goals by sorting information, making plans, and sticking to them.
Impact:
Students create systems (think: calendars, to-do lists, task breakdowns), to proactively manage workloads — reducing last-minute panic, and improving work quality.
Problem-Solving
ExQ builds the brain’s ability to dig into challenging problems, break them down and move ahead.
Impact:
Students approach obstacles with confidence, identify alternatives and adapt strategies instead of getting stuck — boosting resilience and performance in novel situations.
Mental Flexibility
ExQ develops the ability to shift perspectives, adapt to the unexpected and go with the flow.
Impact:
Students better handle changes (new teacher, new format, group work) better, adjust strategies mid-task, and collaborate effectively — improving adaptability and social learning.
Self-Awareness
ExQ trains students to determine their own strengths/weaknesses and navigate towards a better future.
Impact:
Students gain insight into how they learn, let go of their defensiveness and gain insight into how they learn, become self-advocates, and make better choices — improving independence, as less external micromanagement is needed.
Strategic Thinking
ExQ helps students develop new approaches to getting things done, work around obstacles and invent new routines without losing focus.
Impact:
Students don’t just execute tasks — they anticipate roadblocks, create new solutions, and pivot when needed — leading to better results and less wasted effort.
Emotional Resilience
ExQ includes training in recognizing and responding to emotions in a calm, collected way to meet goals.
Impact:
Students manage frustration, disappointments, and setbacks more effectively — reducing behavioral issues, increasing persistence, and improving the classroom and workplace environment.
How Does ExQ Work?
ExQ Executive Function Assessment
ExQ training begins with Executive Function Benchmark Assessment of nine areas; a comprehensive evaluation that identifies each student’s unique strengths and challenges in learning, strategizing, and self-awareness. This assessment builds students’ vision of their Future-Self, creates a psychosocial inventory, and a pathway to goal attainment by providing a clear picture of where support is needed and where growth can be accelerated.
Personalized Executive Function Training Program
Following the assessment, ExQ designs a personalized training program tailored to each student’s academic and personal goals. ExQ training is aimed at cultivating skills in the area of Study Skills, Emotional Management, Communication/Advocacy and Life Skills. This targeted plan helps students develop strategies for improved focus, planning, and independent learning.
Weekly Executive Function Skill-Building Lessons
Students participate in weekly game-based interactive lessons that strengthen cognitive and emotional regulation skills, enhance task management and fine-tune error analysis skills. Video and written journaling promotes metacognition and self-reflection skills. Each lesson is designed to build self-efficacy, confidence, and long-term success in school and beyond.
Transfer and Generalization of New Skills and Strategies
ExQ offers “My Success Playbook” that outlines comprehensive tools, insights, and strategies that have direct applicability to students’ overall success and independence beyond high school. Our methodology paints a Portrait of the Future-Self, a blueprint for success, for students, teachers, leaders and parents that can be used as a personalized learning guide that they can refer to in order to transfer skills to manage complex goals and plans as they pursue college and career pathways.
